A new electrified luxury vehicle contender is about to hit the market. Early in 2022, Alfa Romeo will debut its first-ever electric vehicle, the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). It first debuted as a concept in 2019 at the Geneva auto show, with more information coming to light in recent months.

The new Tonale PHEV is a compact SUV that first debuted as a concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. It will be available in at least five trims: base model, Sport, Ti, Ti Sport, and Ti Lusso. Since the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio models have a more powerful Quadrifoglio model, it may eventually become part of the Tonale PHEV lineup.

Design: Exterior and Interior

We expect the front facia to don the legendary "Trilobo" front grille, an inverted "Scudetto" triangular grille, and two horizontal lower grilles that border the bumper's bottom edge. There's a seamless and full-width rear taillight, while the one-piece taillight naturally curves over the brand logo. You'll also note smaller wheels, conventional door handles, mirrors, and modified bumpers.

The interior is likely to have a simplified, contemporary steering wheel, display, and center console, and the use of high-end materials like aluminum, genuine leather, and Alcantara fabric. Translucent backlit panels complement the drive-mode selector, which allows for three modes: Dual Power, Normal, and Advance E.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV will share the frame from the Jeep Compass, borrowing the plug-in hybrid powertrain from the Jeep Compass 4xe model, a 1.3-liter turbocharged gas-powered engine combined with an electric motor. An 11.4 kWh battery serves the electric motor and travels nearly 31 miles on all-electric power with zero emissions. Electric powertrains will be offered in two outputs—140 kWh and 177 kWh—increasing the all-electric range resulting from improved aerodynamics.

We also expect the Tonale PHEV will be available in two mild-hybrid variants that create 128 horsepower and 158 horsepower.

Based on Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio, convenience and technology features will include a generously sized 12.3-inch instrument cluster display, as well as a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen. The infotainment system offers Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and the Alfista in-vehicle app allows buyers to connect easily with various Alfa Romeo community events and clubs.
